Remote working increasingly popular thanks to technology
Remote working is continuing to increase in popularity as businesses seek to reduce overheads and rising take-up of new technologies make it even easier to keep in touch.
So long as a strong, reliable internet connection is in place, many jobs can now be carried out from home, using technologies such as VoIP and cloud computing to maintain contact with clients and office-based colleagues.
Home-working is popular not just with staff members, who enjoy the lack of commute and the ability to focus on work without the distractions of the busy workplace, but also with business leaders seeking to minimise costs such as office rental.
Technical Manager at computing and communications specialist Node4, Graham Peck, said: “Businesses who have previously wanted to allow their staff to work more flexibly in order to boost productivity now have the tools to do so. And as more people resent paying over the odds for their business accommodation, they now have the incentive to pursue ways of helping staff to migrate to remote working.
“Cloud computing is scalable, meaning that accessibility is available to any business regardless of their current size and growth plans. Workers no longer have to travel to the office to do business and given the current economic climate, this will be welcomed by many,” Mr Peck went on to say.
A sudden change over to remote working was advised against by Mr Peck, however. He advised businesses thinking of switching staff over to remote working to phase in the process gradually, such as by allowing employees to work at home several days a week at first rather than full-time. He also highlighted the importance of remote workers carrying out a ‘desktop assessment,’ which ensures that they have the right environment in which to work.
“Creating adequate space that is designated as their office will ensure that productivity is maximised,” he concluded.
