New IP communications standard takes effect
World IPv6, a new internet standard, has now come into effect online.
The aim of the standard is to create more network space. The demand for more space on the global network is fuelled by the increasing use of devices such as desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablets and smartphones. As online traffic continues to grow quickly, there were fears that internet-enabled devices would have to share IP addresses which would result in slower speeds.
Gadget magazine explains the problem like this, “IPv4 is proving to be inadequate for things like true network mobility, always-on environments, instant connection of devices such as cars, home appliances etc. – there are literally millions of these that require instant IP addresses for connectivity.”
IPv6 aims to address these concerns. The protocol was activated earlier this month and means that trillions of new IP addresses will be created and an almost infinite number of IP addresses are ultimately possible.
Leslie Daigle, Chief Internet Technology Officer for the Internet Society, said, “World IPv6 Launch is a permanent step forward to ensure the internet can connect all the people in the world, for many years to come.”
Under IPv6, connection speeds should be faster, even for internet use on the move. Security should also be improved, experts say, thanks to mandatory Internet Protocol Security.
Of the new system, Liron Segev of Gadget magazine says, “IPv6 sounds complex and for the network IT administrators it is. However for everyone else we will see only improvements going forward.”
However, some have expressed concerns that the new system may make IP addresses more difficult to trace, effectively helping to shield criminals and fraudsters.
