UK Broadband CEO says wireless could play a part in broadband roll-out
A more ‘joined–up’ approach to rolling out fast broadband is needed, according to Nicholas James of UK Broadband in a recent interview with Computing magazine.
Mr James, the CEO of UK Broadband, asserted that combining wireless and fibre services could help to increase the speed of the internet connections being offered to many households around the country.
During his interview, Mr James said that he hoped more broadband providers would start out by focusing on fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) services, as opposed to the more expensive and invasive fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) services. He explained that providing FTTP services is simply not economically viable in many regions at the moment.
Here is where deploying wireless can come in, explained Mr James. He advised the broadband providers to start “dropping base stations at rural cabinets.”
He explained, "Wireless can be deployed quickly – you don’t need to dig up roads and fields, and it allows rapid market coverage.”
His interview concluded with Mr James urging providers to consider wireless as a way to fill in the gaps between where FTTC works and where FTTP works. He said, "We need to look at specific areas and decide where FTTP makes sense today, where FTTC makes sense, in terms of subsidising things further, and then how [we can] deploy wireless to fill in the rest."
