Business broadband boost for Isle of Wight
Companies on the Isle of Wight can look forward to improvements in their business broadband provision after BT announced it is rolling out new technology to the island.
The telecoms firm stated that it is bringing superfast broadband to around 12,000 properties across the island, including in communities such as Freshwater, Wootton, Bembridge, St Helens and Seaview.
Business owners and residents in Niton, Godshill and Rookley, as well as Ryde, Newport, Cowes and Sandown, can also expect to have more broadband options in the near future as a result of the news.
FTTC services from the Openreach network will be available to most people living on the island in the coming months.
Bill Murphy, managing director of next generation access for BT, described the news as being a "great milestone" towards bringing superfast broadband to the people of the Isle of Wight.
Broadband Delivery UK is backing the island scheme and is aiming to give 99 per cent of residents and business owners access to superfast speeds.
Mr Murphy said: "On the island more than 63,000 homes and businesses now have access to high-speed fibre broadband thanks to this multi-million pound partnership and BT’s own commercial fibre broadband programme."
New cabinets are being installed in Chillerton, Chale Green and Ventnor by BT in order to bring superfast broadband to residents of the Isle of Wight.
Many rural parts of the UK have been left behind by business broadband infrastructure in the last few years but the arrival of superfast broadband speeds on the Isle of Wight is a positive sign that improvements are being made in this area.
Isle of Wight Council Executive member for economy and tourism, councillor Shirley Smart, said: "The project is progressing well and giving more and more homes and businesses access to high speed broadband."
Businesses looking to move services into the cloud should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network.
