Trust in cloud computing increasing
Businesses increasingly trust the use of cloud computing, even for critical applications, new research has suggested.
The Future of Cloud Computing Survey, published by North Bridge Venture Partners, has found that of almost 800 respondents, 50 per cent have confidence that cloud solutions are suitable for essential business applications.
The main reason for choosing cloud computing remains scalability, with 57 per cent citing this as their main driver. Meanwhile, 54 per cent said business agility was the main benefit.
However, the report reveals that concerns about cloud computing still persist. Security remains the major worry, with 55 per cent admitting it is an obstacle, followed by compliance (38 per cent) and vendor lock-in (32 per cent).
Software as a service (SaaS) looks set to remain the major source of cloud investment, with 82 per cent of survey respondents saying they currently use it and 88 per cent saying they expect to use it in the future. Platform as a service (PaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) also look set to see significant growth in the next five years,
Michael Skok, partner at North Bridge Venture Partners, commented, “Our second annual survey has revealed that companies are growing increasingly confident in the cloud. While agility and scalability continue to be primary drivers for cloud adoption, IT decision-makers are beginning to trust the cloud with more mission-critical applications like eCommerce.”
The research also reveals that there are four key areas where “cloud formations” are coming together – these are backup and archiving (43 per cent), business continuity (25 per cent), collaboration tools (22 per cent), and big data processing (19 per cent).
Businesses looking to move services into the cloud, should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network.
