State of the Cloud survey reveals levels of cloud usage
One in four organisations are said to be 'heavily into' cloud computing, a new 'State of the Cloud' survey has revealed.
The survey – which was carried out by RightScale, a cloud management provider – found that these organisations were providing lessons regarding the cloud from which others could benefit.
Of those organisations which are making the most of the cloud concept, many are offering up invaluable information technology experience to other global firms. RightScale's research, which polled 625 companies found that this ability to follow in the footsteps of forerunners who have tried and tested the cloud made companies more confident in implementing it.
The survey found cloud computing to be “commonplace” amongst global companies, with just eight per cent wanting “nothing to do with the cloud”. It also showed that the largest enterprises are the leading adopters of cloud-based computing.
RightScale's survey also included a 'Cloud Maturity Model,' which revealed the different levels of cloud usage. 'Cloud Watchers' – which represented 17 per cent of respondents - are "in the process of developing cloud strategies and plans but have not yet implemented cloud projects," reported Forbes.
'Cloud Beginners' – which represented 26 per cent of respondents - are new to the cloud concept and are currently working on first cloud projects.
'Cloud Explorers' - which represented 23 per cent of respondents – have already implemented cloud projects, whilst 'Cloud-Focused' respondents (26 per cent) are “heavily using cloud computing and using it as a strategic initiative to transform business.”
A total of 87 per cent of the Cloud-Focused respondents reported that they were achieving faster access to infrastructure, compared to 30 per cent of those Cloud Beginners.
Businesses looking to move services into the cloud, should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network.
