Small businesses 'missing out' on cloud computing benefits
Small businesses are missing out on the benefits of cloud computing services, according to the latest Intel Business Index.
The research looked at 3,000 IT decision makers and IT users in companies with fewer than 250 employees. It revealed that just 13.8 per cent of IT decision makers claim to have adopted cloud services, while almost half of those questioned were unaware even of what cloud computing is.
Graham Palmer, managing director of Intel UK, urged companies to look into the cloud and other new technology to ensure their business does not lose its competitive advantage in the market.
He added: “It’s important that IT decision makers weigh the advantages, such as the increased efficiency and flexibility delivered by mobile devices, against the cost.”
It isn't just cloud computing that smaller firms are missing out on. The research found that tablets are only in use by 1.4 per cent of those questioned, while only 36.4 per cent use a laptop and just 16.2 per cent use a smartphone.
Unfortunately, insufficient financial and human resources are posing a problem at the moment for around half of IT decision makers when it comes to implementing new technology. Government funding is also an issue, with 78.5 per cent of respondents stating that the lack of government finance is preventing them from training staff in new technologies.
While installing the necessary network requirements for new technology can be expensive, a leased line or managed network can take a lot of the hassle out of IT in the longer-term by allowing a smooth transition to the cloud.
