Only 10pc of SMBs have deployed cloud, claims Google
Research conducted by search engine giant Google has suggested that smaller businesses are being relatively slow to take up cloud technologies.
According to Google, just ten per cent of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) have deployed cloud technologies in the US, despite the fact that 2012 looks set to be the year in which the IT solution really takes off.
On top of the main business networks and systems that can be transferred to the cloud – such as desktop applications – there is the additional factor to consider of employees' portable devices, such as tablets and smartphones.
Managing these gadgets can be costly and time consuming for businesses, but according to Google, the cloud can provide software that helps to manage mobile devices across the board. This not only lowers costs, but can also increase employee productivity by allowing access to shared cloud applications on the move.
While businesses are starting to become aware of the benefits of cloud computing, the industry is looking ahead to see where it can be taken in the future. Amazon, for example, has recently introduced Elastic Network Interfaces for cloud, which allow for more flexibility when configuring a private cloud system.
The operation works by separating IP addresses from the instances, or virtual servers, running in a Virtual Private Cloud. This could be of use to companies or organisations that want to launch resources within a virtual network of their own, isolated from the main Amazon cloud, by allowing for a chosen IP address range, the configuration of subnets, route tables and network gateways.
