Large firms have cloud security worries
Larger companies tend to have more concerns about cloud security than smaller businesses, according to a new report.
Research conducted in July 2014 by the Thunderbird School of Global Management for Insight found that while efficiency savings are driving a lot of enterprises toward using the cloud, many still do not really understand how the technology works.
Harish Krishnamurthy, senior vice-president at Insight Cloud, explained that even though it is 15 years since the cloud started to be a major part of the IT landscape, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding it.
He said: "Due to lack of accurate information, businesses often decide against the cloud and are losing out on substantial benefits. The results of this study coupled with the work we are doing with clients leads us to believe that there is a strong need for increased education and awareness about the reality of the issues and benefits of cloud technology."
Insight released the new report as part of its annual partner forum, Synergy 2015. It found that "the unknowns" of cloud security are among the top reasons why some companies are yet to move their operations into the cloud.
Using the cloud has become the default option for a lot of businesses in the last few years, due to the technology being extremely scalable, flexible and cost-effective, making it a great choice for new firms and fast-growing companies.
"When we asked respondents to identify the reasons for moving toward cloud computing and key drawbacks, they noted improved productivity as the primary reason and highlighted security as the main inhibitor," said Mr Krishnamurthy.
"This is interesting as most of the respondents were people within the organisation who were familiar with the cloud, and most of the organisations were already using cloud services or applications at some level."
Businesses looking to move services into the cloud should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network.
