IT departments concerned about meeting bandwidth demand
Although finding the right staff with the appropriate levels of skill is still concerning for many IT departments, new research shows that cloud computing and obtaining enough bandwidth are the now the top concerns for IT managers around the globe.
Network Instruments’ Fifth Annual State of the Network Global Study found that IT departments are facing major demands for extra bandwidth, because of the proliferation of video conferencing, for example. Some 70 per cent said they will be implementing video conferencing over the coming year, while 60 per cent said half of their applications will be cloud based within a year.
The rise and rise of video is expected to cause networking problems for many IT managers, with a quarter expecting video to take up half their bandwidth in the coming year.
Brad Reinboldt of Network Instruments explained that IT departments need to do more to monitor the impact of new technology: “The reported lack of monitoring tools, quality metrics and visibility creates serious obstacles that prevent IT from effectively managing performance and jeopardises costly technology investments.”
Over the past year, one of the major growth areas in terms of new technology and particularly cloud technology was the rise of software as a service (Saas) and infrastructure as a service (Iaas). The use of both grew by ten per cent.
While many IT executives are sure that their use of cloud computing will increase they still expressed concerns about the security implications of this. They also said they were worried about how well they will be able to monitor the impact that cloud services have on their bandwidth demand.
Firms can opt for leased line solutions to help increase their bandwidth when adopting cloud technologies.
