Healthcare industry shows growing interest in the cloud
Cloud computing is of increasing interest to members of the healthcare industry, although there is still some way to go before it is widely adopted.
This is according to a recent study from CompTIA, which revealed that there is a growing level of familiarity with cloud computing as 57 per cent are now aware of its benefits. However, this is coupled with a very low usage rate of just five per cent as the vast majority of the industry are yet to look into implementing the technology.
The study's authors noted that this figure could be misleadingly low, however, as some healthcare providers are likely to be using Software-as-a-Service and other cloud-based applications without even registering that these things count as cloud computing.
Meanwhile, a strong potential for cloud computing growth was confirmed within healthcare as the ability to share information concerning patients and developments is a vital aspect of the industry. This requires flexibility, scalability, very large data capacity, redundancy and robustness, all of which are elements of cloud computing.
For the moment, however, it seems that widespread cloud adoption is some way off as healthcare providers are yet to embrace the greatest benefits of telemedicine. However, things are gradually starting to change and one in every ten of those surveyed said that they intended to use video conferencing for patient interaction within the next 12 months.
Along with the implementation of cloud computing, this kind of technology will show a higher level of performance if the correct network systems are in place.
