New research suggests that Platform-as-a-Service (Paas) is becoming increasingly popular with businesses.
A study from business intelligence firm Jaspersoft has revealed that 45 per cent of all businesses globally are set to adopt PaaS in the next two years. The study found that 14 per cent are already using PaaS.
When quizzed on the perceived benefits of PaaS, 67 per cent said they believed it would help them build and launch applications faster, whilst 55 per cent noted the cost savings that such cloud solutions can offer.
The survey also noted the demand for business intelligence (BI) capabilities - 39 per cent of respondents said that current SaaS systems don't have reports and analytics embedded. With this in mind, 31 per cent said they have already implemented SaaS BI technology and 33 per cent have plans to do so by 2014.
Of those that use SaaS BI, 55 per cent do so to deliver services to an external audience, whilst 46 per cent use it to deliver services to an internal audience and to mobile devices.
Jim Bell, Jaspersoft's chief marketing officer, is quoted as saying, "Despite it being a relatively nascent technology, PaaS is already making its mark."
He added, "Add to this the fact that over 60 per cent of organisations' SaaS applications do not include BI functionality and you can see there is a desire to for BI capabilities for both PaaS and SaaS applications."
However, the results found that data security around SaaS BI remains a concern for businesses. Three-quarters still say security is a worry, despite ongoing reassurance from the industry and vendors. Other concerns included data being owned by someone else (62 per cent) and cloud reliability (59 per cent).
Bell commented, "With the advent of cloud applications, complete with integrated BI, organisations will increasingly see modern, flexible BI without having to build it or provision it standalone."
Businesses looking to move services into the cloud, should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network.
