Experts makes five predictions for the cloud in 2015
IT experts have made their predictions for how the cloud will develop over the coming year, with SDN, PaaS, speed and security all key influencers.
To call cloud computing a major IT trend for 2015 would be inaccurate – given how well established it already is – but the cloud itself will witness many sub-trends of its own over the next 12 months.
IT Pro Portal has made its predictions of what these changes will be. The first of which is that Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) will enter the enterprise.
Already implemented within the telecoms industry, service providers have long understood the benefits of SDN and NFV to simplify a cloud environment. Enterprises now look set to embrace this technology, allowing them to consolidate their entire IT Service Management capability in one place.
The second prediction of how the cloud will change in 2015 is that IT will be increasingly “containerised”. Containers offer a new, much faster way of provisioning multiple platforms on shared infrastructure, making them extremely valuable for cloud environment.
It also thought that platform-as-a-service (PaaS) will re-emerge in 2015 as a key growth area in the cloud industry. As interoperability between rival platforms increases in the age of big data – in which people want the power to access and analyse multiple data sets – meaning that PaaS providers are databases, metering and data integration capabilities. This will make it easier for businesses to build and deploy PaaS-developed applications on a large scale.
The fourth prediction, which reappears every year, is that a greater emphasis will be placed on speed and security. These are two key aspects of the cloud that organisations want to refine so they can improve their efficiency while also making their data safer.
The final prediction for the cloud is that ‘internet of things’ – in which all manner of everyday devices relay data to the cloud – is going to make the cloud far more important for consumers as it will enable them to monitor various aspects of their life.
