Cloud users urged to encrypt information
Small businesses using the cloud are being urged to encrypt their data to ensure it is secure in the event of a security breach.
According to Government figures, six in 10 small firms and more than eight in 10 large businesses that use cloud computing suffered a breach last year.
By encrypting the information, unauthorised users will be able to see code but authorised users will be able to read and understand the data.
Cloud security has remained an issue since revelations last year by US whistleblower Edward Snowden, who revealed the extent of monitoring being carried out by the US security services.
Pravin Kothari, who set up encryption company CipherCloud, told The Guardian: "A lot should also be said for taking proactive measures to protect data that is of value to your customers and to your own organisation.
"I believe that strong encryption is critical for protecting your business and your customers' privacy in the post-prism landscape. To paraphrase Snowden, ‘trust encryption. Done right, it works’.”
Companies can expect to pay a few hundred pounds a year for one encryption certificate. However, they are being encouraged to look at the potential cost if they do suffer a security breach and what that will mean for their clients.
Accountancy firm Crunch deals mainly with customers who use online and mobile apps to keep their information up to date. The business has invested in different encryption for its apps and data storage, and uses more than one check before clients can access their information.
Crunch spokesman Laurence Barry said: "Vulnerabilities can open up just about anywhere, so multiple layers of security on top of strong encryption are vital.
“People need to be able to trust their service providers, especially when it comes to money.”
Businesses looking to move services into the cloud, should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network. hSo provides managed networks designed for business.
