Cloud computing possibilities expand with launch of OnLive
Consumers are rapidly catching up with businesses when it comes to employing cloud computing for their benefit.
The latest development is the OnLive cloud-based computer gaming service, which is due to hit UK shores mid-September. The concept is already live in the US and allows gamers to access some of the most up-to-date products for consoles.
It appears that OnLive is being slated as a possible competitor for consoles themselves, thanks to its flexibility. If this is the case, consumer use of cloud computing could rise considerably as more people move over to a system of gaming that resembles the way in which we already watch films and enjoy music.
At the moment, such a switch in behaviour is likely to increase consumer bandwidth, making it important for companies to check that they have a good business connection or leased line to ensure they are not affected by the rise in traffic.
Steve Perlman, OnLive founder and chief executive, claimed that the launch of the service in Britain will “utterly transform gaming in the UK”. He added: “No discs, big downloads or specialised hardware needed. OnLive gives you the latest games instantly, anytime, anywhere on HDTV, PC, Mac, as well as iPad, Android tablets. High-performance gaming as accessible as streaming video, with unique social features such as massive spectating with voice chat and Facebook integration.”
The service is free to join and users can then choose between three-day rentals of their favourite gaming titles or unlimited gaming with the title. The system functions with almost any PC or Mac via a browser download. It can also be used on Android or iPad tablets through the use of an app, while any HDTV can run the system via the OnLive Game System.
