Cloud computing 'ideal' for small businesses
The US Small Business Administration (SBA) has highlighted the positives of cloud computing for small businesses across the globe.
Cloud computing is fast becoming an essential component of contemporary business life, with increasing numbers of organisations – of all sizes – making use of the concept.
“Imagine being able to log onto a website and access all the tools and programs that your employees need to do their jobs without having to invest in lots of standalone software licenses,” Smart Data Collective reported the SBA as saying.
“What if you could access all your office productivity tools (email, calendar, word processing, databases, invoicing, CRM, intranet, etc.) from any location or device? What’s more, all the software management and trouble-shooting can be done by the cloud service provider, freeing up your IT resources,” the body went on to say.
A Cloud Computing Tracking Poll carried out by technology solutions provider CDW found that the 28 per cent of organisations based in the US had stepped into the cloud in some capacity. Many of the firms were making use of applications including email, which 50 per cent were using, file storage, used by 39 per cent, online learning - 34 per cent - and web and video conferencing, used by 36 and 32 per cent respectively.
David Cottingham, CDW's senior director of managed services, said, “Many organisations are carefully – and selectively – moving into cloud computing, as well they should, because it represents a significant shift in how computing resources are provided and managed.”
Businesses looking to move services into the cloud, should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network.
