Cloud computing can cut IT costs by half, tech expert says
Boosting a company’s performance whilst keeping overheads low is the name of the game in today’s highly competitive marketplace and one tech expert has highlighted the ways in which cloud computing can help.
IT service provider DataOne Asia’s President and CEO, Cyril Rocke, has said that making use of the right technology, such as the cloud, can assist organisations in minimising expenses – in some cases making savings of up to half.
“Businesses that migrate their IT systems to the cloud could save at least 50 per cent of their expenses. This is because the cloud minimises the cost of infrastructure, management and support,” Mr Rocke said.
“Most IT users tend to underestimate the cost of procuring infrastructure. Whenever a company wants to buy IT equipment like servers, they cannot do it in a snap. They need to follow a long procurement process where they have to justify the project, write cost-benefit analyses, and submit the necessary papers to different departments. Sometimes, there’s even a need to hire IT experts that will decide which equipment is best for a company,” he went on to say.
As well as the cost saving benefits of turning to the cloud, Mr Rocke added that the technology also enables the control of the company to be handed back to its CEO, as their decisions will no longer be restricted by company IT needs. If a non-technical CEO is in place at an organisation, he will no longer have to filter his decisions through “layers of IT experts”.
The cloud also allows organisations the flexibility of testing out new concepts and ideas. Being able to experiment with various different applications and programmes is essential to finding the best fit for the company, and is something that is not easy to do if the firm is tied into an inflexible IT set-up.
“This is why the cloud is a very ideal platform for innovation because it has a low-risk procurement process where CEOs get to define what they want to buy for how long. And if ever there was a mistake in the sizing, they can be stopped or changed,” Mr Rocke concluded.
Businesses looking to move services into the cloud, should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network.
