Businesses 'confused' by cloud options
Businesses are confused about their options for cloud services, according to a new study.
Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) found that many of the 415 executives it spoke to did not understand the pricing levels and related services they applied to. Most of those quizzed for the report used three different cloud computing providers because they still considered the cloud to be an experimental technology and were not yet comfortable with how it will work out for their business in the longer term.
Users have not yet developed any particular loyalty to cloud providers, with six out of 10 interested in bringing more on board and a quarter keen to switch to different suppliers. A further two in 10 said that concerns about a variety of aspects of the service, such as cost and security, meant they were keen to stop working with their current providers.
One of the main bones of contention was the complexity of the pricing structures, which have left many customers confused, Forbes reported.
Lilac Schoenbeck, from iland which authored the EMA report, said: “Pricing can be very confusing or tricky in the cloud... there’s been a great deal of innovation on the vendors for pricing models. But at the end of the end of the day the cloud customers are sort of stuck in the mud with this mess.”
In addition, nearly four in 10 users were unhappy with performance issues and a lack of support from service providers. Many said they did not realise that their subscription did not come with technical support for the product.
EMA analyst Dennis Drogseth said: “Some of the marketing around cloud has suggested that it’s as easy as waving a magic wand, which isn’t the case. Performance is very much a shared requirement between the cloud provider and the IT service team.”
Businesses looking to move services into the cloud, should evaluate the performance of their existing network and consider setting up a leased line or MPLS network. hSo provides managed networks designed for business.
