Space NK implements MPLS private network
Luxury brand Space NK apothecary has implemented an MPLS private network, allowing it to use 3G as a replacement for ISDN to back up store IT systems. This is a growing trend amongst retailers who want to avoid “copper theft”, which can prevent them from being able to take card payments in store. Anthony Baldwin, IT manager at Space NK, told Computer Weekly magazine, "In the face of repeated incidents with copper lines and long repair times, we decided to implement a ‘no wires’ solution rather than a second line or ISDN back-up.” Space NK is now using a service which implements a multiprotocol layer switching (MPLS) based private network which can be accessed over 3G. The new service has been rolled out across 60 Space NK stores in the UK. The system uses 3G sims which run secure networks over the mobile operator’s network and allow Space NK to connect mobile devices such as smartphones and iPads into a data centre. The solution is ideal for the retailer because other options, such as overlay VPNs or secure socket layer VPNs, are designed for sophisticated devices and an iPad, for example, may experience browser compatibility problems. With the new MPLS system, Space NK staff can log in securely using a customer-specific username and password, rather than the generic logins normally used on mobile networks. As well as being used in store, such MPLS solutions also have applications for mobile workers. These systems can also be cost-effective, saving small organisations up to £10,000 on what it could cost to set up an APN. hSo provides managed networks designed for business.
