Euro 2012 infrastructure to run over Layer 3 MPLS VPN

A Layer 3 MPLS VPN is to play an important role in helping to deliver the IT infrastructure required to handle the massive levels of data transmission expected to take place during the Euro 2012 football tournament.

The event, due to take place in Poland and Ukraine, will require a WAN infrastructure to be set up, along with internet links between all of the eight venues that are hosting matches during the event.

Even just providing this will be no small feat, but an additional public access Wi-Fi network is also being built to cover public transport and key tourist buildings, as well as libraries.

To build all this and guarantee 99.999 per cent reliability of systems and hardware, the IT development team has turned to an integrated wired and wireless network, which will provide data transmissions on the basis of fibre optical and Wi-Fi, ultimately over a Layer 3 MPLS VPN.

David Taylor, UEFA events SA CEO, explained that the service is crucial for the delivery of “live match signals from Polish stadiums to UEFA's many broadcaster partners and then on to football fans around the world”.

The network will operate at a Bit rate of 70 Gbps, which is designed to enable simultaneous transmission in HD, if required, from a total of 32 cameras in and around the stadiums.

Maintaining a network of this magnitude with a maximum permitted transmission downtime of just 26 seconds a day is no easy feat. To ensure that it is able to perform during some of the most hotly anticipated football matches of the year, a team will monitor the central LAN and two WAN routers in Poland and Ukraine around the clock.
