Super-fast broadband to offer 100Mbps potential
The development of super-fast urban broadband networks could deliver speeds of up to 100Mbps, it has been revealed.
Businesses in Northern Ireland are the latest to gain from government investment in this technology, with Belfast recently confirmed as a benefactor of the £100 million urban broadband fund, announced by chancellor George Osborne in his Autumn Statement.
Enterprise minister Arlene Foster explained that the development of “our economic infrastructure is critical to rebuilding the economy”.
She added: “This will encourage new businesses to flourish in key creative industries requiring super-connectivity, and allow home-grown businesses to compete globally.”
Businesses keen to take full advantage of the high-speed connectivity might want to look into 10Mpbs leased lines or even 100Mbps leased lines to ensure that they are getting the maximum speed from the new services.
In addition to delivering speeds of up to 100Mpbs to urban areas and cities, a rural broadband fund has already been confirmed by the government to develop networks in areas of the UK that might not be commercially viable enough to leave to natural expansion.
Ms Foster noted that the latest round of urban funding will be in addition to the existing rural fund, which has already been secured.
A total of ten cities will receive part of the urban broadband investment, with six places still open for potential locations to apply for funding. So far, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London have been confirmed as beneficiaries alongside Belfast.
However, so far there has been no indication of the amount of funds that will be allocated to each city. It is thought that this will largely depend on the plans put forward by the individual locations and their scale of ambition in respective broadband plans.
