Leased line to help remote workforce during Olympics
London businesses with leased line connectivity may be better prepared for dealing with the impact of the London Olympics come July, in light of warnings that some businesses could experience slower connections around that time.
A recent article on think broadband.com responded to warnings from the Cabinet Office that internet access may have to be rationed is order to prevent people’s internet crashing during the Olympic Games. The article’s author, Andrew Ferguson, said this was extremely unlikely and that, at worst, some access may be slowed down slightly if, for example, “everyone in the stadium tweets at the same time.” However, he added that this is only likely to impact those in the stadium itself, not Twitter users in general.
However, he did admit that the Olympics could impact small business around the site that opt to encourage their staff to work from home this summer. It is quite clear that many firms are considering increasing the number of staff working remotely over the Olympics, to prevent them being caught up while commuting. However, Mr Ferguson warns that businesses need to think carefully about whether their system will open with a large number of people using them remotely. He explained, “Can the systems that currently only have or two home workers using them actually handle twenty people it at the same time.”
He added that those with leased line connections should fair better: "Businesses which have dedicated bandwidth leased line connectivity, and extensive diverse location hosting solutions should be able to cope as they have ensured that their business has no single point in its communications network.”
