IT executives report increase in network bandwidth demand for data centres
IT executives claim that one of the biggest issues facing their data centres is the need for more network bandwidth.
The findings were made during a study by Emulex, who spoke to 1,529 executives in Europe and North America. They claimed that there is more pressure than ever to increase bandwidth to their data centres. This is due, they claimed, to the emergence of Big Data, cloud computing, server virtualisation and network convergence.
The study found that 81 per cent of the respondents said that increasing network bandwidth was their biggest worry regarding their data centres. The rate at which this demand is increasing is extremely rapid, according to Emulex. It’s senior vice-president of marketing, Shaun Walsh, stated, “Today, 40 per cent have already deployed 10Gb ethernet and, in another four years, the majority of those networks will be operating at 100Gbe. It’s truly unprecedented.”
Of the factors that have resulted in the increased demand for bandwidth, cloud computing was named by 40 per cent of the respondents as a reasons to expand their networks by a quarter or more.
Some 63 per cent said that Big Data applications are causing the amount of storage needed in their data centres to rise by 50 per cent or more over the coming two years. They added that over the same period of time, they will need to increase the network bandwidth to their data centres by the same amount.
Many CIOs are concerns that their business may struggle to keep up with the growing demand for network bandwidth and may consider investing in leased lines to help meet demand.
