New moves to connect trains to Ethernet networks are taking place in the UK, according to reports on therailengineer.com.

An increasing number of firms are opting for Ethernet first mile technology to help them ensure their internet connection is fast and reliable and, as a result, train companies are now keen to follow suit.

However, the Ethernet technology will not be used for the same reasons. Train firms are looking into the possibility of using Ethernet in train networks, which would allow the Train Control System to manage more of the train’s operation. Any Ethernet switch will have to exceed the usual standard enforced in the industry to ensure it can withstand the challenges of being used onboard.

The main reason that train firms want to introduce the Ethernet technology is because of the high level of reliability it offers. Reliability is a major concern for train managers, so the technology needs to maximise the Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) while still ensuring that the usual standards drawn up under the EN50155 regulations are maintained. For example, some requirements could require the use of circuitry that could reduce the MTBF.

Another reason for the adoption of Ethernet technology is because it is easy to maintain. Train firms need to make sure that if something does go wrong with the Ethernet switch, that work can be done to get the network going again by an engineer with little network experience.

There are still concerns to iron out, such as the possibility of the network becoming jammed if devices are connected to the wrong ports, but it is thought that firewalls can be used to limit these problems.
