Nivy Watch turns to Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB to handle data
Nivy Watch smartwatches are among the leading brands designed for professional use. Smartwatches were initially geared towards the fitness market, but are becoming increasingly popular in business due to their ability to gather data on employees and how they are performing in their jobs.
With more people and businesses now using Nivy watches, the Bratislava, Slovakia–based company found it difficult to keep up with the amount of data and increasing demands, so it turned to Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB.
“Our database was huge. We get millions and millions of data records per month, multiplied by one or two years - that’s just massive. And all that data needs to be analysed,” commented Dale Kirkwood, Business Development Manager, Nivy Watch.
“We want to grow—and we want to grow fast. We can do that with Azure Cosmos DB. We’re very confident as a company that this is the right back end for us.”
According to Kirkwood, Azure Cosmos DB is “made for exactly this level of data” and can not only collect data, but analyse it too. Data is stored in document form, making it simple to use, with Microsoft Power BI then used for data manipulation and visualisation.
“A lot of our customers want their data stored nearby for security reasons. With Azure Cosmos DB, we can geo-replicate wherever they are. So, they know—and we know—that everything’s taken care of,” Kirkwood said.
The low latency and high availability of Azure Cosmos DB mean that Nivy Watch customers can access their data whenever they need it and from wherever they are in the world. These global geo-replication abilities have been described as “a critical advantage to winning new customers“ by Kirkwood.
He added: “We’re a very fresh, very new company to this market. We’re going to be growing exponentially over the next few years, and Azure Cosmos DB is giving us the confidence to talk to new customers knowing we have this excellent database. It’s a very important thing for a small company.”
