How We Calculate the Cost of Leased Line Circuits

We've calculated the cost of leased line connections for hundreds of thousands of firms. Here's how we do it.

First, We Request Wholesale Prices

The biggest cost of leased line providers is the raw connectivity underpinning their services.

When you order an internet leased line, it's not likely that your provider will dig a big long trench to link your location to a data centre. instead, they'll just buy a short extension cable to link your site to a nearby network. These extension cables are known as 'tail circuits.' They are point-to-point ethernet connections.

From there, the pre-existing network will carry the traffic to your leased line provider's nearest data centre, via fibre-optic circuits that are already in the ground.

We request wholesale prices from BT's infrastructure subsidiary (Openreach), as well as BT Wholesale, Virgin Media, TalkTalk Business, Colt, Vodafone, SSE Telecom, KCOM and others. We do that using APIs, scraping and pricing tables.

We Calculate Standardised Prices - Adding The Cost of Leased Line Hardware, Installation and Financing

Before we compare these wholesale prices, we have to make a few adjustments to make things comparable and ensure the figures reflect the costs not just of the circuit, but also of the hardware that will be needed.

By default, we provide a free managed router and free installation on 3-year contracts, even though these things aren't really free. Wholesale suppliers typically charge thousands for installation. We aim to recoup these cost over the life of the contract.

We Compare Prices ...Automatically, Instantly

Unless you tell us otherwise, we select the wholesale supplier that allows us to offer you the lowest price at your site.

We then calculate a retail price based on the 'winning' wholesale quote. This covers the cost of providing the rest of your service, including 24/7 technical support and internet access.

The only exception to the 'cheapest option' rule is where suppliers are not performing to the high standards we demand. In those cases, we may temporarily exclude a supplier from consideration or adjust its bid so it only wins the comparison if it's quote is materially better than the next best option.

Millions of Leased Line Prices Compared

We've compared millions of prices, to help hundreds of thousands of firms find the right deal.

To get a quote for your specific location, just use the pricing tool at the top of this page. You'll need to know the postcode, the full site address, and you'll need to select how much bandwidth you need.

If you'd like a price for a bandwidth option not listed, just give us a call on 020 7847 4510.

Why We Compare the Cost of Leased Line Connections

Which wholesale supplier offers the best value option varies from location to location, as wholesale suppliers base their quotes on how much it costs them to connect your site to their network.

Different wholesale suppliers have different network footprints. So the cheapest supplier to one location might not be the cheapest at another.

Back in 2000 when we started, we used to request quotes manually from our suppliers. But as the volume of quote requests grew, that became impractical. So we spent a fortune creating a system that could automate the process and compare prices in seconds.

It has saved us a fortune and saved our customers a fortune too.
